A popular question that we get from the waver community is "How to wash a durag?". The best and easiest way to wash your durag is by hand with a bucket, water and some laundry detergent. Hand washing and drying cleans any silk durag or velvet durag type and prevents them from shrinking that happens during machine washing and drying.
Fill a bucket about halfway with lukewarm water.
Pour 1 tablespoon of mild laundry detergent into the water. Stir the detergent into the water to dissolve, if necessary.
If there are any stains on the do-rag that need treating, place a small amount of detergent on the stain, and let set for five minutes before placing it in the water. Gently rub the stained areas in the durag while in the water. Let the durag soak for 20 minutes.
Remove the durag from the bucket, and rinse under lukewarm water until the water runs clear. Gently squeeze excess water from the durag. Hang the durag in a warm, dry area. Allow the durag to dry fully, ideally overnight, before using it to wrap your hair again.
